Women Harvesters’ Cooperatives and Digital Payments, Mozambique

Supports women harvesters to form cooperatives with their own rules, savings and bank accounts, and moves their payments from cash to mobile money. Cooperatives gain a voice in price negotiations and a share in what happens next to the fruit they gather.

Problem to solve

Women do most of the harvesting but are paid in cash, individually, with no savings, no records and little say in the price, which keeps their income low and insecure.

What the evidence says

One Mozambican buyer works with about 1,738 women who sold baobab in 2021 and has offered the collectors’ association 20% company shares, evidence that cooperative structures can give women a lasting stake.

Expected outcome

Registered women-led cooperatives with savings, trained leaders, and most payments made digitally.

Target population

Women harvesters and their households in Manica; cooperative leaders; and local savings-group members.

600 people targeted
